Our MA mobile veterinarian is committed to doing everything possible to help your pet live a long, healthy and active life. This starts with proactive pet wellness care, including annual health exams, regular vaccinations and boosters, dental care and microchipping for pet safety. Preventative pet care not only reduces the risk for illness and health problems, but also helps to reduce the overall cost of veterinary expenses for pet owners. A small investment in vaccinations and wellness exams will help pets enjoy a more active life, reduce the risk for illness, and help prevent the need for expensive emergency care.
Our veterinarian recommends that all pets receive an annual wellness checkup. This exam includes a full physical, a fecal sample test to check for parasites, and diagnostic blood work. Diagnostic blood work is especially important for older pets that are more likely to suffer from health problems. Since pets are experts at hiding the symptoms of illness, health problems may not be detected until illness reaches an advanced stage, making it more difficult to treat. A blood chemistry panel can detect blood work changes that may indicate everything from possible cancer to a thyroid imbalance. Early detection saves lives!
During the wellness exam, our MA mobile veterinarian will also confirm that your pet is up-to-date on all core vaccinations. Pet vaccinations protect against highly contagious illnesses including parvo, distemper and rabies, which can easily spread between pets. In the case of rabies, this deadly disease can also affect humans. All pet should receive the puppy/kitten shot series and then be re-vaccinated against these diseases with booster shots after one year. Subsequent booster shots may be every one or three years, based on the vaccine manufacturer’s recommendations and your pet’s health needs. Our home veterinarian works closely with pet owners to determine the right vaccine schedule for your pet’s health needs. Depending on your pet’s lifestyle, we may recommend additional vaccines, such bordetella, which protects against kennel cough.
Dental care is an equally important part of pet wellness. Unfortunately, few pets receive adequate dental care. Consequently, an estimated three out of four pets over the age of three are suffering from periodontal disease. Plaque deposits can push away the gum line, creating pockets within the gums that are susceptible to bacterial infection. Dental cleanings are the best way to reduce the risk for gum disease and serious bacterial infections. During a dental checkup, our home veterinarian will scrape away tartar and plaque buildup from your pet’s gum line and then polish the teeth.
Additionally, for your pet’s safety and your peace of mind, our home veterinarian strongly recommends microchipping all pets. A microchip is a tiny chip with a serial number that is implanted between your pet’s shoulders; if your lost pet is found, a veterinarian can scan the chip and reunite your pet with your family.
